Expect the Best at Washington Eye

Washington Eye Physicians have a national and international reputation, having served the Washington area and beyond for more than 50 years. Because our physicians are noted sub-specialists, our practice serves as a major referral center providing a unique combination of advanced specialty expertise in a private practice setting. Our practice consists of both ophthalmologists and optometrists.

Our ophthalmologists specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of eye disease, as well as general eye care. They are board certified specialists of the American Board of Ophthalmology and are members of numerous professional societies. Our ophthalmologists are ophthalmic surgeons who use the most advanced techniques available in performing both cataract and other specialized ocular surgery. Each doctor has specific sub-specialty training within ophthalmology, and all are actively involved in teaching, lecturing, research, writing, and advancing their specific fields.

Doctors of optometry are primary health care providers who examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures. Optometrists do not perform surgery, but they perform comprehensive eye examinations and work in conjunction with ophthalmologists to provide pre- and post-operative care.

Washington Eye Physicians are noted top doctors whose skill and expertise are routinely called upon to assist those in need of solutions to their vision problems. Laser vision correction, treatments for cataracts, glaucoma and other eye diseases, and cosmetic and reconstructive eye surgery are just a few of our specialties. Fees & Insurance

Our fees are usual and customary for the area and are determined by the services we render and your insurance plan's regulations. If you have any questions regarding our fees, please be sure to discuss them with our business office personnel.

Our practice is responsive to the need for health care cost containment. It is for this reason that we request that all office fees be paid at the time service is rendered. Your prompt payment reduces costly billing services. We accept your personal check, cash, Visa or Master Card.

We participate with Medicare and Blue Cross-Blue Shield, MDIPA, United Healthcare (effective 10/2005), National Capital PPO, and many other health plans. Please inquire whether we participate in your health care plan. If your health plan requires a referral before being seen, please be certain to bring it with you. Co-payments and deductibles will be collected upon check out.

We also require payment in full at the time of service if your insurance company is one that we do not participate with, and for non-covered services such as refractions and contact lenses.

Fifty Years and Two Generations

An excerpt from Washington Eye Physicians & Surgeons Newsletter

In 1954, houses in the Washington area were selling for $16,000, a new Ford cost $1200, Dwight Eisenhower was President of the United States, and Melvin G. Alper started out in practice in the Washington area. A complete eye examination cost $15 and you didn’t need a referral from your HMO. Dr. Alper wrote textbooks, lectured nationally and internationally, and established a tradition of delivering the very best medical care possible from the day he opened his practice. Fifty years later, much has changed and much has remained the same as Washington Eye Physicians and Surgeons approaches its 50th anniversary of serving the Washington area and holding true to Dr. Alper’s tradition.

Ken Schwartz has extraordinary training and credentials, having served as the Chief Resident in Ophthalmology at the Washington Hospital Center with subsequent training in the subspecialty of glaucoma at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. The younger Dr. Schwartz did part of his glaucoma fellowship with Dr. Douglas Anderson at Bascom Palmer, recognized as one of the leading glaucoma specialists in the world and, coincidentally, one of the professors who helped train Dr. Arthur Schwartz. We are particularly pleased that, in spite of being offered many other prestigious positions, Dr. Kenneth Schwartz joined Washington Eye.
