Choosing the Right Doctor for Laser Vision Correction
Finding someone to trust your sight to is an important decision. No one needs emergency laser vision correction, so take your time until you feel comfortable with your doctor and the information that you've received. You should be able to meet your surgeon before your procedure and ask him or her any questions you have. The laser vision correction surgeons at our practice in Chevy Chase, Maryland, will schedule a free consultation with prospective candidates.
Laser Vision Correction Experience
Recent studies have demonstrated that LASIK is a difficult procedure in which complications decrease with increased experience up to 1,000 cases. For this reason, many authorities believe you should insist upon a laser vision correction surgeon who has performed at least 1,000 LASIK procedures or more. It is also generally a good idea to find a surgeon who trains other doctors in laser vision correction and is certified to do so.
FDA Approval
Be certain that your surgeon uses an FDA-approved laser or a laser that has a special FDA exemption. Remember that the procedure of LASIK does not have to be FDA-approved but the laser used for any laser vision correction procedure should be. The excimer laser used at our facilities in Maryland and Virginia is ideal for LASIK eye surgery.
Feeling Comfortable about Laser Vision Correction
Your doctor should make it easy for you to find laser vision correction patients you can talk to about their experiences before and after their procedures. You should also be able to observe procedures at the laser center. Your doctor should also do everything possible to make you feel comfortable with your decision to undergo laser vision correction and to reassure you about any discomfort or other concerns you might have. He or she should do everything possible to make the potentially frightening experience of laser vision correction as comfortable, easy, and free of concerns as possible. You should feel confident that if your first treatment does not give you the results that you're seeking, your surgeon will provide another procedure to fine-tune your vision further, if desired.
No Guarantees
You should never choose a surgeon who claims to be able to guarantee any sort of surgical result or freedom from any potential problems. While most patients are delighted with their laser vision correction outcomes, no one can honestly guarantee results.
Our Team of Doctors in the Washington DC Area
The laser vision correction team of Drs. Martin, Rubinfeld, and Adi have performed over 10,000 LASIK procedures. Hundreds of doctors, surgeons, and other health care workers have trusted their eyes to our laser vision correction team based in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
After thousands of LASIK procedures, and twenty years of marriage, Dr. Rubinfeld performed LASIK on his wife! (They are still married). Several hours after laser vision correction surgery, she drove their daughter to a friend's house without contact lenses for the first time in her life. (Dr. Rubinfeld strongly recommends that you do not try this at home). Her vision is now 20/20 without glasses.
In 1995, Dr. Rubinfeld had so much faith in the procedure that he had laser vision correction himself, and he continues to see better than 20/20. He has also performed laser vision correction on Dr. Dawn Devaney Gammon, our optometrist, Kate Kelley, our laser vision coordinator and Celestine Shird, our head technician. Hundreds of other eye doctors, surgeons, and other health professionals have trusted their eyes to Dr. Rubinfeld.
Many of our office and surgical staff have trusted Dr. Martin to perform laser vision correction as well. Dr. Martin has performed LASIK on Diann Ryan, our contact lens technician, who now enjoys golf and driving without glasses. Recently a rabbi's wife and minister's wife had Dr. Martin perform their LASIK procedures, and they are very pleased with their 20/20 vision. Dr. Martin has also performed laser vision correction on many other doctors and health care professionals, lawyers, pilots, athletes, business professionals, and others just like you!
Dr. Adi performed LASIK on her technician Rietta, who was thrilled to give up wearing her contact lenses. Rietta will enter medical school next year with her new 20/20 vision.
Our doctors have helped train many local LASIK surgeons, and co-managing doctors through proctoring, lectures, and articles. These doctors have chosen our laser vision correction team for their own LASIK as well as that of their families and staff.
The prospect of clear vision without glasses is appealing, but what is the procedure really like? Ask any of the Washington Eye employees pictured below who have all had laser vision correction – they'll be happy to share their personal experiences with you.
