Firefighters, Police, and the U.S. Military in Emergency Situations

The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon have highlighted the selfless heroism of our nation’s firefighters, police, and rescue workers, as well as the preparedness of the U.S. military. In an emergency situation, many individuals who might be dependent on glasses or contact lenses have appropriate concerns about their ability to function without them. This has been a concern of the U.S. Military for many years and recently several branches of America’s ARMED FORCES have approved Laser Vision Correction.

For over ten years, we at Washington Eye have provided laser vision correction to firefighters, police officers, military, and emergency service personnel at a significantly reduced cost. The heroism of these public servants has rarely been more evident, and they deserve our gratitude. We at Washington Eye pledge ourselves to continue this practice indefinitely.

Concerns about seeing well enough to function effectively in an emergency situation are not limited only to emergency, rescue, and military professionals. Over the last ten years, many patients have told us that this was the most important reason they had their vision corrected. Parents have been concerned that they would not be able to see their children well enough if they were swimming. People traveling on business have been concerned they might not be able to see well enough in the event of a fire or other emergency to help themselves or others. Many times we’ve heard stories about patients who were, in fact, able to help in an emergency situation because they had procedures to provide them with normal vision without contact lenses or glasses.

U.S. Armed Forces Approves Laser Vision Correction for Some Active Duty Personnel

“After years of testing, three service branches of the U.S. Armed Forces have approved Laser Vision Correction for some Active Duty personnel. Each of the three branches of service has separate and specific policies. All military personnel considering Laser Vision Correction must check with their specific branch prior to having vision correction surgery.”
