6 Signs That You May Have Cataracts

Cataracts cause your vision to become blurry due to the lenses in your eyes clouding over. This is a natural part of aging and is easy to fix during cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery is fast, safe, and performed on millions every year. Blurry eyesight is not the only thing that you need to look out for with cataracts.

Here are some more signs to look out for to help you stay ahead if you have cataracts!

Difficulty Seeing in Low Light

Your blurry vision from cataracts will be most noticeable at night. This is because cataracts already block light from entering your eyes.

When there is less light available, like at night, it becomes even harder to see. You may feel the need to install extra lighting in your home or shine a light closer to tasks you complete.

This can also make driving at night particularly dangerous. You should avoid doing so any time you feel that you are putting yourself and others in danger.

It’s better to stay off the road and be safe instead of putting other people in unnecessary danger!

Color Changes

Cataracts affect the color of your vision. You may notice your vision beginning to have a yellowish hue to it.

You may also notice that the contrast between colors becomes more difficult. This can often result in colors appearing faded.

Changes in Prescription

As your eyesight worsens, you may not realize the cause of it. This leads you to need stronger and stronger lenses to compensate.

Light Sensitivity

While cataracts themselves are not painful, they may make you more sensitive to light. This is particularly noticeable when going outside on a sunny day.

In some cases, your cataracts may cause glare by making the light that enters your eye scatter and bounce.

Double Vision and Other Phenomena

Cataracts can have some interesting effects on your vision. They can cause you to see multiples of an image that you are focusing on, usually in one eye. They can also cause fixed light points to appear to have halos around them.

Your Doctor Informs You During a Visit

You should be seeing an eye doctor at least once a year, more often if you are older than 40. You can set up an appointment at Washington Eye in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

These visits will allow your doctor to check for any eye issues you are at risk of, in this case, cataracts.

Remember, if you have these symptoms, it does not always mean that you have cataracts. Only a licensed professional can diagnose you.

If you do have cataracts, we can come up with a plan for when cataract surgery should occur. We’ll also be able to keep an eye on the development of your cataracts.
